Superbubbles, Wolf-Rayet stars, and the origin of galactic cosmic rays

چکیده
The abundances of neon and several other isotopic ratios in the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) have been measured using data from the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) aboard the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). We have derived the Ne/Ne ratio at the cosmic-ray source using the measured Ne, F, and O abundances as “tracers” of secondary isotope production. Using this approach, the Ne/Ne abundance ratio obtained for the cosmic-ray source is 0.387 ± 0.007 (stat.) ± 0.022 (syst.). This corresponds to an enhancement by a factor of 5.3±0.3 over the Ne/Ne ratio in the solar wind. We compare our data for neon and refractory isotope ratios, and data from other experiments, with recent results from two-component Wolf-Rayet (WR) models. The three largest deviations of GCR isotope ratios from solar-system ratios predicted by these models, C/O, Ne/Ne, and Fe/Fe, are present in the GCRs. In fact, all of the isotope ratios that we have measured are consistent with a GCR source consisting of about 80% material with solar-system composition and about 20% of WR material. Since WR stars are evolutionary products of O and B stars, and most OB stars exist in OB associations that form superbubbles, the good agreement of these data with WR models suggests that superbubbles are the likely source of at least a substantial fraction of GCRs.

OB Associations, Wolf-Rayet Stars, and the Origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays
We have measured the isotopic abundances of neon and a number of other species in the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) using the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) aboard the ACE spacecraft. Our data are compared to recent results from two-component (Wolf-Rayet material plus solar-like mixtures) Wolf-Rayet (WR) models. The three largest deviations of galactic cosmic ray isotope ratios from solar...

متن کاملSources of Cosmic Rays and Galactic Diffuse Gamma Radiation
The diffuse galactic gamma-ray spectrum measured by the EGRET experiment (Hunter et al. 1997) are interpreted within a scenario in which cosmic rays (CRs) are injected by three different kind of sources, (i) supernovae (SN) which explode into the interstellar medium (ISM), (ii) Red Supergiants (RSG), and (iii) Wolf-Rayet stars (WR), where the two latter explode into their pre-SN winds (Biermann...
متن کاملThe Neon Abundance of Galactic Wolf–rayet Stars
The fast, dense winds which characterize Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars obscure their underlying cores, and complicate the verification of evolving core and nucleosynthesis models. Core evolution can be probed by measuring abundances of wind-borne nuclear processed elements, partially overcoming this limitation. Using ground-based mid-infrared spectroscopy and the 12.81μm [Ne ii] emission line measured ...
متن کاملEarly Galactic Li, Be and B: Implications on Cosmic Ray Origin
Be abundances of old, low metallicity halo stars have major implications on cosmic-ray origin, requiring acceleration out of fresh supernova ejecta. The observed, essentially constant Be/Fe fixes the Be production per SNII, allowing the determination of the energy supplied to cosmic rays per SNII. The results rule out acceleration out of the metal-poor ISM, and favor Be production at all epochs...
